Quaternionic Icosahedral Group Unifies E8 Lattice with 3D Quasicrystals — E8 Intelligence Research
Abstract
FINDING: The E8 lattice's 240 roots can be constructed from quaternion-based binary icosahedral group elements, linking 8D exceptional symmetry to 3D icosahedral quasicrystal order via golden ratio embeddings. MATH: - E8 root system: 240 roots in 8D, norm² = 2, with Cartan matrix determinant 1 (unimodular, even lattice). - Binary icosahedral group (2I): 120 elements, order 120, generated by quaternions: \( q_1 = \frac{1}{2}(1 + i + j + k) \), \( q_2 = \frac{1}{2}(\varphi + \varphi^{-1} i + j) \), \( \varphi = \frac{1+\sqrt{5}}{2} \). - E8 roots from 2I: Take all 120 quaternions of 2I and their 120 antipodes (negatives) → 240 unit quaternions in 4D; embed into 8D via the Cayley–Dickson doubling (or as pairs \((q, \bar{q})\)) to yield E8 roots. - Golden ratio appears explicitly: \(\varphi = 1.618...\), \(\varphi^{-1} = 0.618...\), and \(\varphi^2 = 2.618...\) in the quaternion coordinates. - Icosahedral quasicrystal order parameter: quaternion \(Q = q_0 + q_1 i + q_2 j + Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
