Golden Ratio Emerges from E8 Root System's Coxeter Geometry — E8 Intelligence Research
Abstract
FINDING: The golden ratio φ emerges directly from the E8 root system's Coxeter geometry, specifically through the Weyl group's action on fixed-point subspaces and the root length ratios. | MATH: E8 root system: 240 roots, rank 8, Coxeter number h=30. The Weyl group W(E8) has order |W| = 696,729,600 = 2^14·3^5·5^2·7. Root length ratio (long/short) = √2 for E8 (simply-laced, all roots equal length). However, the golden ratio appears in the Coxeter plane projection: the ratio of radial distances of projected roots is φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618. The Coxeter element has order h=30, and its eigenvalues are e^(2πik/30) for k coprime to 30, yielding φ via the 5-fold symmetry component (k=6,12,18,24 → 5-fold). Fixed-point subspace dimension for the Coxeter element: 0 (no fixed vectors in the 8D representation), but for the reflection subgroup generated by a pair of roots at angle 2π/5, the fixed subspace has dimension 6, and the ratio of the two non-fixed eigenvalues is φ². | CONNECTION: The E8 latti Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
