Golden Ratio Inflation and Bragg Peaks in Penrose Quasicrystals — E8 Intelligence Research

Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: Penrose tiling is a non-periodic quasicrystalline structure whose inflation symmetry is governed by the golden ratio, with diffraction patterns revealing sharp Bragg peaks despite aperiodicity. | MATH: Inflation/deflation factor = φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618; reciprocal factor φ⁻¹ = φ−1 ≈ 0.618; Fibonacci numbers Fₙ appear in tile counts (Fₙ, Fₙ₊₁) under inflation; Fourier transform of the tiling yields a dense set of δ-function peaks (Bragg peaks) at wavevectors k = Σ nᵢeᵢ where eᵢ are golden-mean-related basis vectors; 5-fold rotational symmetry (forbidden in periodic crystals) is preserved in the diffraction pattern. | CONNECTION: Direct geometric harmony — φ, φ⁻¹, and φ² = φ+1 ≈ 2.618 are the inflation ratios; the tiling's vertex configurations and Ammann bars encode the golden ratio; 5-fold symmetry relates to icosahedral root system H₃ (non-crystallographic Coxeter group), not the crystallographic A/B/C/D lattices; the Fourier transform's self-similarity mirrors the tiling's se Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
