Phase transition in new macroscopic continuum model considering forward–backward looking information and electronic throttle angle dynamics under overtaking effect
Abstract
In the context of Connected Automated Vehicles (CAVs), overtaking behavior is a key factor leading to traffic instability. In real-world traffic scenario, driving decisions depend not only on forward-looking information but also on rear-view effects and vehicle dynamic control parameters in case of lane change. Therefore, we in this paper establish a macroscopic continuum model that comprehensively integrates overtaking behavior, forward/rear-view information, and Electronic Throttle Angle Dynamics (ETAD). Firstly, based on an improved microscopic car-following model, the density and velocity equations for the macroscopic continuum model are derived via a micro-macro transition, incorporating forward/backward equilibrium velocity functions, overtaking disturbance terms, and ETAD control terms. Secondly, linear stability analysis is applied to attain the neutral stability condition, revealing how the parameters modulate the system's instability boundaries. Also, nonlinear analysis is adopted to derive the KdV-Burgers equation which characterizes the evolution of density waves in unstable regions. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate that overtaking behavior significantly exacerbates the instability of traffic flow, and the stable region is effectively expanded and the formation and propagation of stop-and-go waves is suppressed by enhancing ETAD control intensity and increasing the weighting of forward-view information.
