MERLIN SCIENCE — Golden-Ratio Geometry in Coxeter Group H3: Precursor to 3D Quasicrysta — E8 Intelligence Research
Abstract
Today's finding is this: the finite reflection group H3, the symmetry group of the icosahedron, is not a decorative curiosity. It is the exact algebraic skeleton that generates the thirty star vectors observed in icosahedral quasicrystals. In one clean sentence: H3 is the group-theoretic source of three-dimensional quasi-crystalline order. Here is the context. Since the discovery of quasicrystals in the 1980s, we have known that materials like Al-Pd-Mn display diffraction patterns with sharp peaks and fivefold symmetry, which is forbidden in ordinary periodic crystals. The standard explanation involves projecting from a higher-dimensional lattice, usually six-dimensional. But that projection is a mathematical tool. The question has always been: what is the actual finite symmetry object that lives in three dimensions and dictates those thirty vectors? The answer is H3. Now the mechanism. H3 is generated by three reflections, with pairwise orders five, three, and two. That gives a Coxe Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
