Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: The E₈ lattice (Gosset 4₂₁ polytope) serves as the 8-dimensional parent structure from which 3D icosahedral quasicrystals emerge via projection, with a quaternion order parameter classifying the solidification transition. MATH: - E₈ root system: 240 minimal vectors, 6720 edges (4₂₁ polytope), Coxeter number 30, rank 8. - Projection: 8D → 3D icosahedral quasicrystal via a 3D irrational subspace (cut-and-project method). - Quaternion order parameter: \( q \in \mathbb{H} \), with icosahedral symmetry group \( I_h \) (order 120) acting on \( \mathbb{R}^3 \) via \( q \mapsto q' = a q b^{-1} \), \( a,b \in I_h \). - Fibonacci chain emerges in 1D projection of E₈: slope \( \tau = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 = 1.618... \), giving inflation ratio \( \tau \) and its inverse \( \tau^{-1} = 0.618... \). - Key constants: \( \tau, \tau^2 = 2.618, \tau^{-2} = 0.382, \tau^{-1/2} \approx 0.786 \). CONNECTION: - **Golden ratio family**: The Fibonacci chain (1D quasicrystal) is the canonical pr Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
