Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: The E₈ lattice's 240 roots, when projected via quaternionic icosian folding, generate the golden ratio φ and icosahedral quasicrystalline order in 3D. | MATH: E₈ root system: 240 vertices, 6720 edges; icosian group: 120 quaternions (binary icosahedral group 2I); projection E₈ → H₄ → 3D yields φ = (1+√5)/2 as the dominant eigenvalue of the folding operator; Fourier transform of the E₈ quasicrystal projection shows sharp Bragg peaks at φ-scaled frequencies; quaternion orientational order parameter Q = Σ qᵢ⊗qᵢ* for icosahedral solidification. | CONNECTION: φ appears as the ratio of radii in the 4D 600-cell (H₄) and its 3D icosahedral shadow; the icosian ring ℤ[φ] (Eisenstein-like in quaternions) is the integer span of φ; E₈'s Coxeter-Dynkin diagram folds to H₄ via the golden ratio twist; crystallographic: 5-fold symmetry emerges from 8D lattice projection, breaking the 3D crystallographic restriction theorem via higher-dimensional embedding. | DEPTH: 9 — This is a direct, rigorou Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
