A Reproducible Typesetting Solution for Zsigmondy–Palmer Dental Notation

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Zsigmondy–Palmer dental notation, still used in dentistry and dental education, has a two-dimensional, quadrant-based structure that is difficult to reproduce consistently in modern digital documents. Earlier digital approaches enabled symbol entry or rendering through specialized fonts, keyboard approximations, and character encoding, but the approaches reviewed here did not formalize quadrant-addressed content separately from document-level composition. This study aimed to define a structured representation that separates quadrant content from its two-dimensional placement, and to implement and technically validate it. We developed palmer.sty, a LaTeX package that arranges tooth identifiers and quadrant lines automatically from that structured input, so the notation can be edited and reused directly in the document source. We additionally developed palmer-type, a companion graphical user interface application that renders the same notation as reusable image output for word-processing and presentation software. Defined rendering and diagnostic checks support package operation across three LaTeX engines, and source-level functional tests support image export and Word conversion with experimental alternative text. The evidence presented here is limited to functional validation; usability, workflow efficiency, and comparative task performance were not evaluated. These tools complement the standardized Fédération Dentaire Internationale (FDI) system by supporting the consistent digital representation of Zsigmondy–Palmer notation in documents where it continues to be used.
