Vulnerability and Resilience: The Plight of Elderly Widows in Rural Bangladesh
Abstract
ABSTRACT The article aims to explore the key challenges faced by elderly widows in rural Bangladesh. Specifically, it examines their socioeconomic and demographic conditions, the problems they encounter, and the initiatives taken by government (GOs) and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to address these issues. The study has adopted mixed method research that combines both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Data were collected through in‐depth interviews, semistructured interview guides, and surveys. Findings reveal that the majority of elderly widows in rural areas face significant socioeconomic and health‐related challenges, leaving them highly vulnerable in society. They often struggle with health, psychological, mental, and financial difficulties due to inadequate support systems and a lack of proper caregiving facilities. The study recommends that the government place greater emphasis on these issues by introducing targeted programs, including counseling services, healthcare initiatives, increased widow allowances, and community awareness campaigns to support elderly widows in rural Bangladesh.
