Investigation of maresin 1 and possible associated intracellular pathways in nasal polyp pathophysiology
Abstract
Nasal polyps are a chronic inflammatory condition causing obstruction, secretion, anosmia, and headaches. This study examines the links between MaR1, which resolves inflammation, and key mediators of tissue remodeling and chronic inflammation, TGF-β and Nrf2, to guide treatment strategies and new therapy development. Nasal mucosa samples were collected from 30 nasal polyp patients undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery and 30 rhinoplasty patients as controls. MaR1, Nrf2, and TGF-β levels were measured by ELISA. In the measurements performed using ELISA, it was observed that MaR1 and Nrf2 were significantly increased, and TGF-β levels were significantly decreased in the nasal polyp group. The study suggests that MaR1, in conjunction with Nrf2 and TGF-β, is involved in the pathophysiology of nasal polyps. Potential treatments for nasal polyps may be better understood with more comprehensive and well-matched studies.
