Parental acceptance of silver diamine fluoride staining in anterior and posterior teeth in Brazil
Abstract
Abstract Purpose To evaluate parental acceptance of silver diamine fluoride (SDF)-related staining in anterior and posterior primary teeth and to explore associated sociodemographic factors. Methods This cross-sectional study included 103 parents or legal guardians of children with previous caries experience attending a paediatric dentistry clinic in Brasília, Brazil. A structured questionnaire adapted from a previously published instrument was administered through face-to-face interviews. After receiving a standardised explanation of SDF treatment, participants evaluated printed photographs of primary anterior and posterior teeth before and after SDF application. Acceptability was rated using a four-point scale and dichotomised as acceptable or unacceptable. Paired responses were compared using McNemar’s test, and multivariable logistic regression explored associations with educational level and family income. Results Acceptance was significantly higher for posterior than for anterior teeth (62.1% vs. 27.2%; p < 0.001). Participants with incomplete higher education had lower odds of accepting anterior staining than those with postgraduate education (OR = 0.04; 95% CI 0.003–0.67; p = 0.024). No income category was significantly associated with acceptance. Conclusion Parental acceptance of SDF staining differed substantially according to tooth location and remained limited for anterior primary teeth. The educational association should be interpreted cautiously because of sparse observations and the absence of a consistent gradient. Realistic visual information and individualised communication are important when discussing SDF treatment with parents. Trial registration Not applicable. This study was not a clinical trial.
