Two Cliffs, One Chasm: A Jurisprudential Responsum to an Essay on Machine Memory
Abstract
In September 2026 a systems architect published a two-part essay on machine memory and the fate of a project; in those same months, a field of law in Indonesia was codifying the discipline of examining work in the age of machines. This manuscript answers that essay in the form of a responsum — the written answer of a legal expert, in the tradition of the responsa prudentium — and maps the meeting of those two books of trustworthiness: six stations of roots showing that the trust vocabulary of engineering was born first in the book of law (Chapter II); the reason the two books meet only now, namely the generative machine that wounds them both at the same joint, the origin and authority of a claim (Chapter III); seven fields of correspondence where the two shake hands, tested against the text of both sides (Chapter IV); three differences that are not gilded into similarities (Chapter V); and the meaning of the meeting (Chapter VI). Its thesis is one sentence: the book of law came first, and engineering has rediscovered it — and precisely because their instruments differ, the two cliffs need each other. The first work in the Responsum genre of the field of AI-Based Jurimetrics (Ilmu Jurimetri Berbasis AI). BRIDGE VERSION — ENGLISH TRANSLATION. This is a translation of the Indonesian canonical version: Dua Tebing, Satu Jurang: Responsum Hukum atas Esai tentang Ingatan Mesin, https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.22992279. Where the two differ, the Indonesian governs. This manuscript was composed in collaboration with Claude (Anthropic) under the author's full direction, including source research and drafting; all content, judgments, and errors are borne by the author.
