Character Education and Value Reorientation as Catalysts for National Development in Nigeria

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Nigeria's persistent developmental challenges, including corruption, insecurity, weak institutional trust and declining civic responsibility, have increasingly been linked by scholars to a deficit in character formation and a broader erosion of societal values. This paper therefore, examined character education and value reorientation as catalysts for national development in Nigeria. It specifically looked at three objectives: to examine the role of character education as a catalyst for national development in Nigeria; to assess the role of value reorientation as a catalyst for national development in Nigeria; and to identify the challenges confronting character education and value reorientation in fostering national development in Nigeria. The paper adopted a literature-based methodology, drawing on recent peer-reviewed scholarly work. The paper was anchored on the theoretical framework of Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Development and Human Capital Theory. The paper revealed that while character education and value reorientation possess demonstrable potential to strengthen ethical conduct, civic responsibility and institutional trust, their transformative effect in Nigeria remains constrained by curricular neglect, weak implementation, inconsistent role-modelling and institutional corruption. The paper concluded that character education and value reorientation, though necessary, are not sufficient in themselves to guarantee national development unless accompanied by consistent institutional enforcement and ethical leadership, and it therefore recommended overhauling curricular reform, teacher capacity-building and coordinated value-based governance as pathways to realising their developmental promise.
