A Quantum Field Theory of Inter-Site Fluctuation Dissipation: Soft Phonon Bremsstrahlung, Phase Agitation, and the Dynamical Resolution of Quantum 1/f Noise
Abstract
Low-frequency excess fluctuation (1/f or flicker noise) in solid-state systems has historically remained suspended between empirical defect-trapping descriptions and the quantum infrared bremsstrahlung hypothesis. While Handel's quantum formulation predicted realistic noise magnitudes across clean channels and junctions, it encountered an enduring theoretical barrier: the asymptotic cancellation critique articulated by Carolyn M. Van Vliet and contemporary theorists. Founded upon the Bloch–Nordsieck and Lee–Nauenberg theorems for asymptotic in- and out-states, standard scattering theory dictates that real soft-boson emission divergences are cancelled in inclusive cross-sections by virtual loop corrections, while environmental trace-orthogonality strictly eliminates the off-diagonal quantum interference cross-terms required to generate macroscopic low-frequency beats. Here, we demonstrate that this four-decade theoretical impasse originates from an unphysical idealization: treating carrier scattering as an isolated event occurring across a static, translationally invariant vacuum. In real condensed matter media, transport proceeds across an active, non-stationary inter-site potential manifold driven by the multi-pole vibrational displacements of surrounding lattice ions. By establishing the kinematics of the inter-site saddle as an open quantum system, we formulate a non-Markovian field theory where the classical Gaussian disorder field agitates the carrier's quantum phase and parametrically modulates the soft-phonon emission vertex. This dynamical phase agitation prevents asymptotic destructive cancellation, yielding a non-vanishing imaginary expectation kernel that preserves the macroscopic interference cross-terms. Coupled with intrinsic spatial regularization provided by the crystallographic correlation length , the soft-phonon emission rate remains finite down to zero frequency. Convolving this quantum kernel with the spatial de-alignment of the electron quasi-Fermi level yields an exact, closed-form Hooge parameter expression, resolving both the long-standing Anderson–Van der Ziel diode injection problem and establishing an operando metrological protocol to decouple quantum radiative corrections from classical energetic disorder.
