Rethinking Relation in a Generative Relational Framework
Abstract
This paper refines the concept of relation within a Generative Relational framework. It develops three coupled registers of reality—ontological, relational, and manifestational—and assigns each a distinct analytical role. Objects are identified through criterion-indexed distinguishability, while relations are specified through couplings that render states, trajectories, or generative conditions dynamically non-independent. Relational reality is characterized by emergence, sufficient persistence, and causal efficacy at a selected scale. Manifestation concerns indexed availability to experiential, epistemic, observational, or symbolic systems, while symbolic structures may mediate relational reality prior to subject-relative manifestation. The framework thereby supports a relational account of contingency that can precede aesthetic recognition and separates distinguishability from comparability and metric commensurability. Interaction is treated as localized dynamic participation capable of revising persistent couplings, and register-relative equivalence allows manifestational similarity to coexist with relational or ontological difference. A comparison with Lacanian registers clarifies transversal mediation across distinct register architectures. The resulting account provides a foundation for analyses of trust, institutions, power, artificial intelligence, political interaction, and aesthetic judgment.
