Surface‐Modified Slag as Partial Replacement of Carbon Black for Green Tire Tread Rubber

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study adopted hybrid silicone resin to modify industrial slag, and utilized the modified slag as a reinforcing filler to partially substitute carbon black for preparing green radial tire tread compounds. The results demonstrated that hybrid silicone resin was successfully grafted onto the slag surface, which greatly improved the dispersion of slag in the rubber matrix and eliminated filler agglomeration. When the modifier dosage was 2.5 phr to replace 10 phr carbon black, the modified slag enhanced the crosslinking efficiency and processing performance of rubber compounds, and maintained mechanical properties equivalent to pure carbon black systems. Moreover, the modified filler system obviously optimized the abrasion resistance and dynamic mechanical properties of tread compounds, lowered heat generation and rolling resistance, and realized the synergistic improvement of tire wear resistance and low rolling resistance. This work realizes the high‐value resource utilization of industrial slag, reduces carbon black consumption, and provides a feasible technical route for the development of green low‐carbon tire tread compounds and the sustainable development of steel and tire industries.
