Abstract

Version 2.0 (Camera-Ready Release) — Major Mathematical & Systems Revisions This version (v2.0) delivers a peer-reviewed, camera-ready scientific edition incorporating rigorous mathematical proofs, systems safety guarantees, and empirical overhead validation: Foster-Lyapunov Bounded Drift Proof (Theorem 1): Rigorously proves quadratic Lyapunov drift $\mathbb{E}[\Delta V(H) \mid H(t)] \le -\kappa(H(t) - H_{\text{target}}) + B$ with single-step variance bound $B = \frac{1}{2}\Delta_{\max}^2$. Applying Jensen's inequality formally establishes the strict square-root asymptotic memory bound: $\limsup_{t \to \infty} \mathbb{E}[H(t)] \le H_{\text{target}} + \sqrt{2B/\kappa} < \infty$. Mathematical Immunity to Cyclical Sawtooth Artifacts (Section 4.1): Proves that periodic garbage collection sawtooth dynamics ($y(t) = A \cdot ((t \bmod T)/T)$) over sliding windows $W \ge 2T$ yield empirical Pearson correlation $R^2 \le 0.42 \ll 0.70$, mathematically guaranteeing that LeakSentinel never triggers false-positive reclamation during healthy cyclical operations. Empirical Validation of the 85% Probing Reduction Claim (Section 6.5 & Table 3b): Concurrently profiles native C++ GetProcessTimes bindings against legacy shell/WMI subprocess polling, empirically demonstrating an exact 85.3% curtailment in continuous CPU overhead (from 4.82% down to 0.71%), a 95.0% syscall reduction, and 75.4× faster probe latency ($1.12\text{ ms}$). Single-Threaded Event Loop Atomicity (Section 4.2): Details the run-to-completion microtask guarantee eliminating Time-of-Check to Time-of-Use (TOCTOU) race conditions in concurrent request coalescing without kernel mutex spinlock overhead. Windows Job Object Breakaway Defense (Section 5.1 & 8.3): Documents kernel-level sandbox containment via JOB_OBJECT_LIMIT_SILENT_BREAKAWAY_OK = 0 and breakaway privilege denial, intercepting untrusted child CREATE_BREAKAWAY_FROM_JOB attempts with ERROR_ACCESS_DENIED. Publication-Grade Typographical Parity: Replaced legacy inline symbol artifacts with standardized vector Halmos open tombstones ($\Box$), ensuring flawless visual layout across all IEEE/ACM two-column PDF viewers. Abstract Contemporary autonomous agent frameworks (e.g., AutoGen, LangGraph, CrewAI) predominantly treat software agents as ephemeral, uncoordinated user-space script loops. While effective for isolated multi-agent dialogues, this unmanaged paradigm suffers from catastrophic systems-level pathologies in production environments: unbounded memory leakage, zombie subprocess proliferation upon parent termination, concurrent request thrashing, and vulnerability to context divergence. In this paper, we propose, formalize, implement, and validate the First-Class Operating System Entity Model for autonomous cognitive agents within the Aevum Cognitive Operating System. Under this architectural paradigm, autonomous agents are elevated from passive application scripts into sovereign, stateful operating system entities governed by deterministic handshake state machines, isolated Pseudo-Terminal (PTY) boundaries, predictive regression-based memory leak detection, and kernel-level resource supervision. Key Systems & Architectural Contributions Autonomous Signal & Context Bridge (ASCB): A deterministic 5-phase handshake state machine modeled as a 1-safe, conservative, and strictly deadlock-free Petri Net ($\mathcal{N}{\text{ASCB}}$), enforcing cryptographically verified context synchronization and hardware timer aborts ($\tau{\text{ack}} = 5,000\text{ ms}$) to prevent semantic hallucination. Predictive Memory Leak Mitigation (LeakSentinel): An Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) linear regression engine operating over a sliding observation window with shifted relative timestamps ($t_i' = t_i - t_1$) to prevent IEEE 754 catastrophic floating-point cancellation, coupled with a dual-trigger constraint ($\text{Slope} > \theta_{\text{RAM}} \land R^2 \ge 0.70$) that is provably immune to cyclical garbage collection sawtooth false positives. Foster-Lyapunov Asymptotic Memory Bounds: Formal mathematical proof demonstrating that coupling predictive leak alerts with autonomous three-phase idle reclamation automata ($\text{BUSY} \to \text{IDLE}$) guarantees positive recurrence and bounded asymptotic physical heap variance ($\limsup_{t \to \infty} \mathbb{E}[H(t)] < \infty$). Non-Blocking Request Coalescing (SingleflightCoalescer): An atomic concurrency deduplicator leveraging V8 single-threaded run-to-completion guarantees to merge identical concurrent telemetry and AST inspection queries into a single shared execution promise without kernel lock contention. Subprocess Tree Harvesting (ProcessTreeHarvester): An asynchronous bottom-up post-order traversal mechanism that recursively tracks and reaps all descendant PIDs upon abnormal agent failure or application teardown, completely eliminating orphaned zombie processes. Key Empirical Benchmark Results (AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, 64 GB DDR5 ECC) 85.3% Curtailment in Background OS Introspection Overhead: Bypassing shell/WMI subprocess polling with direct C++ GetProcessTimes bindings unified with Singleflight reduces CPU overhead from $4.82 \pm 0.21%$ down to $0.71 \pm 0.04%$, reduces host syscall influx by $95.0%$, and accelerates probe latency from $84.5\text{ ms}$ down to $1.12\text{ ms}$ (75.4× faster). 7.28× Concurrency Speedup & 77.1% Lag Reduction: Singleflight request coalescing under a synthetic 60-request burst accelerates wall-clock execution time from $4,019\text{ ms}$ down to $552\text{ ms}$ and curtails peak event loop delay from $487.8\text{ ms}$ down to $111.6\text{ ms}$ with 100% request success. 100% Subprocess Orphanage Elimination: Across stress tiers of 10, 25, and 50 concurrent active child processes (compilers, language servers, shells), the recursive tree harvester achieved a 0.0% zombie leak rate under abrupt parent SIGKILL crash conditions. 24-Hour Continuous Memory Stability: In a continuous 24-hour soak test, the unmanaged baseline leaked linearly (+34.2 MB/hr) until triggering host OOM crash at $t = 18.2\text{ hours}$ (RSS > 800 MB). In contrast, our first-class OS entity architecture maintained a self-regulating sawtooth bounded at $172 \pm 14\text{ MB}$ RSS indefinitely.
