A compact automotive antenna module with low coupling between mobile and satellite antennas
Abstract
Abstract A new compact automotive multi-antenna module is presented for 5G multiple-input multiple-output applications, as well as Satellite Digital Audio Radio Systems (SDARS) and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) applications in the L1 and L5 bands. The new design consists of two broadband monopole Palm tree antennas for 5G mobile services between 0.6 and 5 GHz, where one of them is surrounded by an SDARS Scarabeus ring antenna, while the other one is surrounded by a novel octagonal dual-band GNSS antenna. This way, every 5G antenna shares its footprint with an antenna for satellite reception. The antennas are combined on a very small area of 114 mm by 56 mm within a height of 26 mm. All of the antennas are designed for low mutual coupling and omnidirectional radiation patterns for the desired elevation angles. In this framework, we introduce a new octagonal GNSS Scarabeus ring antenna, which yields an especially low influence on the matching of the 5G antennas and their antenna patterns. The new antenna concept is verified by way of simulations. A hardware prototype is realized, and antenna measurements are shown, which prove its performance.
