Sitting with the Consequences: Addressing Sedentary Work in Modern Law Librarianship

Open access0 citations

Abstract

As law librarianship has evolved from print-centered workflows to digital workflows, its physical nature has fundamentally changed. Tasks once requiring movement—shelving, maintaining print collections, and assisting patrons—are largely replaced by computer research, virtual instruction, and electronic communication. This article argues that law librarianship has become a structurally sedentary profession, with prolonged sitting now embedded into its core workflows. Drawing on public health research, it examines risks associated with extended inactivity and how workplace norms and practices shape movement. It concludes that physical wellbeing is essential to professional sustainability and highlights leadership and practical strategies to reduce sedentary harms.
