Beyond Austerity: Fuel, Gold and India’s Search for Economic Resilience

0 citations

Abstract

India has emerged as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, but its global ambitions remain closely tied to how effectively it manages energy dependence, foreign exchange pressures and external economic shocks. Against a backdrop of growing geopolitical uncertainty and volatile global markets, do the government’s appeals to reduce non-essential consumption, conserve fuel and moderate gold purchases merely call for austerity, or do they reflect a deeper strategy of economic foresight and national resilience? This article explored the macroeconomic logic underlying such appeals within the wider context of India’s external vulnerabilities, import dependence on energy and long-term economic and developmental aspirations. It is an invitation to critically rethink whether the idea of collective restraint should not be viewed merely as a sacrifice, but as a form of anticipatory economic management, strategic prudence and responsible economic citizenship, which may be central to sustaining economic stability in an increasingly volatile global order.
