Abstract

CivDynamics begins from a simple asymmetry: civilizations can persist for centuries or millennia, while every human carrier is temporary. Any long-lived civilization must therefore survive repeated replacement of bodies, leaders, institutions, settlements, technologies, and memory media. This paper argues that persistence should not be modeled as state invariance. A civilization can remain historically continuous while changing location, political form, population composition, institutional architecture, or load-bearing center. The proper object of study is not whether every component survives, but whether enough generative continuity, memory, function, and relational capacity remain for successor structures to be produced. The paper formalizes four initial propositions: D1, civilization is dynamic rather than static; D2, civilization contains a persistence drive derived from human biological survival, organized group maintenance, and institutional self-reproduction; D3, persistence can require transformation; and D4, civilization depends on cross-generational reloading because civilizational duration greatly exceeds individual lifespan. From these propositions the paper develops the Persistence–Transformation Coupling, the Civilizational Stasis Paradox, the Persistence–Migration Principle, carrier portability, node failure versus civilizational extinction, structural redundancy and “network insurance,” selectively permeable boundaries, and the Persistence Option Space ΩP. The framework treats migration as a normal civilizational process rather than an exception. Anticipatory migration moves load-bearing functions before an old node fails; reactive migration re-embeds people, skills, memory, and relations after disruption. System-engineering metaphors such as live migration, cold recovery, and fragmented recovery are used only as analytical analogies. They help distinguish the relocation of an intact authority chain from reconstruction after the central chain has already broken. Historical sketches from Pompeii and the Southern Song illustrate why city destruction, capital loss, or carrier replacement need not equal civilizational extinction; the North Sentinel Island case is used more cautiously as a sub-civilizational boundary condition for selective permeability rather than as proof about civilization-scale dynamics. CivDynamics also separates survival from persistent generativity. A system can survive locally while its future option set narrows. Development is therefore treated here, not as a single scalar of wealth or power, but as a candidate increase in viable future states under explicit constraints. This creates a research bridge to PPCL: human generation intervals are empirically on the order of decades, so generation replacement is a plausible source of temporal structure in civilization; however, PPCL's proposed 30/60-year rhythms remain an independent hypothesis to be tested rather than a premise of CivDynamics. The paper ends with operational variables, failure conditions, and a research program for measuring migration, continuity, redundancy, boundary permeability, reloading, and collapse without turning “civilization” into an unfalsifiable organism metaphor.
