Enumerating Caxtons: Gower’s Confessio Amantis [1483] and its Implications

Abstract

This article examines the evidence of surviving copies of William Caxton’s [1483] edition of John Gower’s Confessio amantis . It suggests the difficulties in earlier attempts to compile such a record and provides a more detailed and extensive record than hitherto of both copies and fragments.
