Bridging Meaning and Form: An Integrated Ardalan-Pirnia Framework for Critical Regionalism in Contemporary Iranian Architecture

Abstract

Contemporary Iranian architecture faces a disconnect between meaning and spatial form, often leading to formal imitation or alienation. Although Nader Ardalan and Mohammad-Karim Pirnia are key references in defining Iranian architectural identity, their ideas are usually studied separately. This research proposes an integrated framework linking Ardalan's semantic principles with Pirnia's structural logic. Using qualitative comparative analysis, the study extracts conceptual overlaps to build a theoretical model. Applying this framework retrospectively to two documented contemporary Iranian projects suggests that Ardalan's "unity" and "centrality" can be operationalized through Pirnia's "human-centricity" and "self-sufficiency" in spatial design. This framework offers an alternative to superficial traditionalism and provides a practical strategy for designing contemporary spaces with cultural continuity and modern adaptability.Status: Under review
