The Future of Telecommunications Infrastructure in the United Kingdom: Towards Converged, Intelligent and Resilient Networks
Abstract
The Future of Telecommunications Infrastructure in the United Kingdom Towards Converged, Intelligent and Resilient Networks is an independent industry-analysis article examining how UK telecommunications infrastructure is likely to evolve through the convergence of full-fibre networks, 5G Standalone, future 6G technologies, cloud-native networking, carrier-grade IP infrastructure, automation and artificial intelligence. The article considers the increasing integration of fixed and mobile networks, software-defined and virtualised network functions, intelligent network assurance, edge and cloud infrastructure, non-terrestrial connectivity and the growing importance of cyber security and operational resilience. It also discusses the engineering requirements associated with modernising national connectivity while maintaining reliability, scalability, service continuity and secure operation. Drawing on telecommunications-engineering perspectives, the article highlights the role of carrier IP and transport networks, automation, observability and resilient architecture in supporting the UK’s future digital economy. It is intended for telecommunications engineers, infrastructure specialists, researchers and technology stakeholders interested in the next stage of UK connectivity development.
