Solvent‐Based Spray Coating in Pneumatic Conveying in a Dedicated Spray Chamber Using Rapid Prototyping Created Nozzles
Abstract
ABSTRACT Coating processes are used in various industries to adapt the particle surface. Pneumatic conveying systems are already present in many particle processing plants for transportation. The dilute flow regime in the commonly used Wurster coater is also present. This article investigates the possibility of integrating the coating step into a pneumatic conveying line to economize the coating apparatus. A vacuum‐based test rig with additive manufactured coating chambers and nozzles was used. Coating during pneumatic conveying showed to be feasible, with the coating mass correlating linearly with the created layer thickness. The concept not only shows promising results at significantly lower apparatus requirements, but also lower yield compared to a Wurster coater in overspray and hence coating yield.
