Design and Development of a 3D Cylindrical Periodic Table Model Using Locally Available Materials: The Cylindrical-Spiral Cardboard Helix (CSCH)

Open access0 citations

Abstract

This white paper documents the design, historical basis, and construction of a 3D Cylindrical-Spiral Periodic Table Model (CSCH), built to address a common learning gap in Senior School chemistry: students memorising element positions without understanding periodic trends or the table's spatial continuity. The paper traces the periodic table's history from Aristotle through Mendeleev and Moseley, with a dedicated in-depth study of Alexandre-Émile Béguyer de Chancourtois' 1862 telluric helix, the direct structural ancestor of the CSCH model. It includes full component analysis, periodic trends, and a complete illustrated construction procedure using locally sourced, recycled materials.
