Why Contemporary Meaning Is Gossamer

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Why Contemporary Meaning Is Gossamer offers a structural account of how meaning behaves in contemporary cultural environments. The paper distinguishes rich meaning, which is layered, slow, ambiguity‑tolerant, and supported by high relational density, from gossamer meaning, which is light, fast, emotionally immediate, and stabilized through minimal relational structure. It argues that contemporary meaning has become increasingly responsive to strong attractors—heroic conflict, spectacle, binary identity, conspiratorial patterning, and consumption—because these forms provide rapid coherence without requiring deep context or developmental scaffolding. Rather than diagnosing cultural decline, the paper describes a shift in the structural conditions under which meaning is produced and circulated. It shows how gossamer meaning shapes cultural behavior, why interpretive volatility emerges, and how rich meaning remains possible through local density, developmental scaffolding, slow practices, and shared context. The paper provides a conceptual framework for understanding meaning in low‑density environments and clarifies how depth can still be cultivated within them.
