Lattice Parallels Between K3 Surfaces and Topological Insulators: A Cautionary Note — E8 Intelligence Research

Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: K3 surfaces (with discriminant group ℤ₂^8, not ℤ₂^22 — the search term conflates this with topological insulator ℤ₂ invariants) and topological insulators share a common lattice-theoretic structure via even unimodular/2-elementary lattices, but the search results do not establish a direct mathematical equivalence. | MATH: K3 surface: H²(X,ℤ) ≅ Λ_K3 = E₈(−1)² ⊕ U³ (even, unimodular, rank 22, signature (3,19)); discriminant group of Picard lattice can be ℤ₂^a (2-elementary, a ≤ 20), not ℤ₂^22. Topological insulator ℤ₂ invariant: ν ∈ ℤ₂, computed via Pfaffian of time-reversal operator at Kramers points; related to Chern number mod 2. No equation in results directly linking them. | CONNECTION: Both involve root lattices: E₈ (crystallographic, Weyl group order 696,729,600) appears in K3's H²; topological insulators' ℤ₂ classification relates to symplectic/orthogonal symmetry classes (Altland-Zirnbauer), which map to Clifford algebras and Bott periodicity (period 8 — same as E₈'s Co Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
