CHALLENGES TO ACHIEVE GENDER EQUALITY AND SDG 5 IN AFRICA

Abstract

Gender equality is a global phenomenon that necessitates ongoing discussions among scholars, professionals, advocates, legislators, and other relevant stakeholders. Gender inequality persists in society and in the workplace despite the establishment of institutional and legal structures. The article's goal is to investigate gender equality (focus) within the African region (locus). Gender equality is closely related to Sustainable Development Goal 5, which all nations must attain. The data for the article is gathered using qualitative desktop analysis. Document analysis is used for the information analysis. The findings show that there are challenges to achieve gender equality, such as structural implementation, social and cultural resistance to legal reforms, the burden of child marriage, to state a few. The article offers policy recommendations emphasising strengthening legal enforcement and accountability systems, focusing on transforming harmful gender social and cultural norms, reducing unpaid care burden through public investment, and abiding to legal frameworks. The study contributes to the disciplines of public management, development studies, and gender studies.
