Performatives presume speaker knowledge

Abstract

Abstract Performatives are declarative sentences where their use by a speaker enables the speaker to perform an additional action. This paper argues that performativity requires knowledge. The speaker must know what they say to perform the additional action. The significance of this conclusion is then discussed.
