ABSTRACT: Yao Ming is remembered internationally as one of the greatest basketball players to emerge from China, but his enduring significance reaches far beyond his extraordinary height and athletic accomplishments. Born in Shanghai in 1980, Yao rose from the Shanghai Sharks to become the first overall selection in the 2002 National Basketball Association Draft. During his career with the Houston Rockets, he became an eight-time NBA All-Star and five-time All-NBA selection. He represented China at three Olympic Games, entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, and was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2023. This article is not a conventional sports biography. It is an interdisciplinary work of life writing inspired by the longtime admiration shared by the author, Lawrence K. Wang (王抗曝), and his dear old friend and former high-school classmate, Dr. Hung-ping Tsao (曹恆平). Tsao, a mathematician now living in California, and Lawrence K. Wang, a humanitarian environmental engineer now living in New York, USA, were classmates at the Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University (HSNU) in Taipei, Taiwan, Republic of China. Each earned four academic degrees and continued to emphasize education throughout life. They especially admire Yao's determination to earn a bachelor's degree in economics after injuries ended his basketball career. Inspired by Yao's meaningful "second life," Tsao and Wang have themselves become late-arriving apprentices of poetry—"poets halfway along the road" (半路出家成為詩人). The article examines Yao's journey from Shanghai to Houston, his basketball accomplishments, physical suffering and retirement, education, philanthropy, youth programs, wildlife conservation, leadership of Chinese basketball, and role as a cultural bridge between China and the United States. It argues that Yao's physical height made him visible and his athletic ability made him famous, but his perseverance, humility, learning, compassion, and public service made him truly great. Personal recollection, humanitarian environmental reflection, and trilingual poetry present Yao Ming as a role model whose second life reached far beyond the basketball court.
