Beyond Enrolment: Jharkhand's Next Education Challenge

Open access0 citations

Abstract

This opinion article examines the evolving education landscape in Jharkhand and argues that the state’s next major education challenge lies beyond enrolment—in ensuring meaningful learning, student progression, teacher availability and educational quality. Jharkhand has made substantial progress in improving school access, reducing dropout rates and expanding school electrification. However, important challenges remain, particularly at the secondary and higher-secondary levels. The article highlights concerns relating to the transition of students from Class 8 to Class 9, lower enrolment at the higher-secondary stage, teacher vacancies, single-teacher schools and the disproportionate decline of tribal students as they progress through the education system. The article argues that enrolment should not be treated as the final measure of educational success. The next phase of education policy in Jharkhand should focus on strengthening teacher recruitment, improving grade-level learning outcomes, monitoring student transitions, supporting vulnerable groups and ensuring that children remain in education and successfully progress to higher grades. The central argument is that Jharkhand has demonstrated its ability to bring children into classrooms; the next challenge is to ensure that they stay, learn, progress and receive quality education. The article also places these issues within the broader framework of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), which calls for inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
