Learning Rocket Science #1 – History, Importance, and Dangers of Rockets, and Basic Information About Rockets
Abstract
This work is the first lesson of the Learning Rocket Science educational series. It covers the historical development of rockets, the importance of amateur rocketry, safety considerations, and the basic components of rocket systems. The purpose of this work is to provide a basic foundation for readers who are interested in rocket science and are beginning to explore the field. The work also introduces fundamental rocket terminology in order to establish a common terminology for the concepts that will be used in subsequent lessons. The historical development of rockets and the contributions of important figures are examined chronologically. The work also discusses the importance of amateur rocketry as an interdisciplinary field involving physics, chemistry, mechanics, aerodynamics, electronics, materials science, design, and measurement. Safety is addressed as an integral part of amateur rocketry. The work discusses accident risks, the importance of scientific and engineering principles, and the potential risks associated with misinformation and unsafe practices. It also examines the relationship between amateur rocketry and the potential misuse of rocket technology. The final part introduces the basic structure and components of amateur rocket systems. These subjects are intended to establish the fundamental knowledge required for the more detailed theoretical, computational, design, and practical topics covered in subsequent lessons
