Stoicism and Christianity Compared: A Systematic Analysis of Their Commonalities and Differences

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Stoicism and Christianity share three concerns: moral character, inner constancy, resilience under adversity. They rest on fundamentally different foundations. Stoicism builds on rational self-mastery and an impersonal cosmic order; Christianity builds on a personal God, divine grace, and a relational understanding of the human person. This article traces the historical points of contact, the genuine parallels, the limits of commonality, and the structural differences that exclude a simple synthesis.
