Open access0 citations

Abstract

Abstract The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly transformed the global financial landscape, with cryptocurrency emerging as a major disruptive innovation. Cryptocurrencies, based on blockchain technology, operate on decentralized systems that eliminate the need for traditional financial intermediaries such as banks. In India, where digital adoption is accelerating, the rise of cryptocurrencies presents both opportunities and challenges for the banking sector. This study examines the potential impact of cryptocurrency on the Indian banking system, focusing on its influence on financial transactions, customer behaviour, and the overall structure of banking services. While cryptocurrencies offer benefits such as faster transactions, lower costs, enhanced transparency, and greater financial inclusion, they also pose serious risks including market volatility, regulatory uncertainty, cybersecurity threats, and potential misuse for illegal activities. The study analyses whether cryptocurrencies will act as a substitute or complement to traditional banking. It concludes that although cryptocurrencies are unlikely to replace the Indian banking system in the near future, they will significantly reshape its operations and regulatory environment, necessitating adaptive strategies by banks and policymakers to ensure financial stability and sustainable growth.
