Impact Of Sri Lankan Tamil Migration on Globalized Human Capital and Global Economy
Abstract
Migration has become one of the defining characteristics of globalization in the twenty-first century. Among the significant migration movements in South Asia, the migration of Sri Lankan Tamils represents a unique example of forced displacement evolving into a globally connected diaspora that contributes substantially to economic development, human capital formation, cultural exchange, entrepreneurship, and international knowledge networks. Beginning with post-independence ethnic tensions in Sri Lanka and intensifying during the civil war (1983–2009), millions of Sri Lankan Tamils established communities across Asia, Europe, North America, Australia, and the Middle East. Today, the Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora plays a pivotal role in shaping global labor markets, knowledge economies, innovation ecosystems, educational advancement, and transnational investments. This article examines the migration of Sri Lankan Tamils through the lenses of globalization, globalized human capital, and economic development while evaluating its social, cultural, political, and economic implications.
