Unencumbered Virtual Reality: Sensory Reconstruction, Interocular Delay, and Opt-In Neural Tailoring
Abstract
We specify virtual reality for a standing observer with no headset and no glasses. Head-mounted displays, including stereoscopic glasses, are not required by the visual system: the optical image terminates at the retina and is reconstructed as spike patterns. Interocular delay is already read as depth (Pulfrich); a single pattern can carry binocular disparity with no viewing apparatus (autostereogram). Present headsets still omit veridical touch and proprioception and impoverish visual depth. The encoder is the room (genlocked projectors or an LED volume, optional haptics), timed on a 1–10 ms tick by a real-time controller plus a GPU node—not a consumer notebook. Optional personalization uses consented EEG telemetry, drawing on U.S. Patent 3,951,134 (1976) and the Neural-Plasma record (Venerable, D., and xAI, Grok 3, 10.5281/zenodo.16982197) as prior art for sensing, not as covert drive. Walking away withdraws consent. This is a design paper. No new threshold, EEG dataset, or hardware run is reported.
