DrillerDB Well Records Dataset: Coverage, Provenance, Normalization, and Research Access

Abstract

DrillerDB maintains a compiled database of 22,983,432 water-well records from all 50 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces. The records come from public well-completion reports and well logs published by state and provincial agencies. DrillerDB retains source links, maps differing agency fields to a common schema, geocodes records where source information supports it, and standardizes 53,064,222 lithology intervals from 10,069,442 well logs to one controlled vocabulary. This technical note documents the corpus, its provenance, processing, known limitations, citation format, and research-access conditions. It does not distribute the underlying record-level database. No well rows, coordinates, CSV files, or database extracts are included. Record-level access remains controlled through the DrillerDB Research Program and its data use agreement.
