Beyond Scaling IV: World Models Without Future Preservation / Meta-Complex Observation and the Changing Structure of Reachable Futures

Open access0 citations

Abstract

This paper examines a limitation of predictive and agentic world models: the distinction between predicting future states and observing how an agent's own intervention changes the structure of reachable futures. World models can predict action-conditioned trajectories, and existing work has addressed embedded agency, reachability, attainable utility, future-task preservation, empowerment, recovery, observer-dependent reachability, and future-state navigation. The contribution of this paper is narrower. It formulates Meta-Complex Observation as the recursive observation regime in which an embedded observer or agent intervenes in a system, changes the future-reachability structure, and must subsequently observe a world whose relevant future structure has been altered partly by that intervention. The paper introduces State–Future Divergence as a paper-local descriptive distinction between small observed state change and larger change in future-reachability structure; Future-Subject Binding as a framework requirement for identifying whose accessibility or recoverability has changed; and the Hidden Commitment Interval as a paper-local temporal label for the interval between persistent observed recovery closure and later visible failure under a defined observation horizon. These terms are not claimed as first discoveries of reachability, observer dependence, future navigation, or pre-failure route loss. Rather, they organize existing adjacent concerns into a problem formulation focused on action-induced future-structure change and subsequent observation. A minimal synthetic demonstration is provided to distinguish state observation, future-structure observation, recovery closure, and visible failure. The results are not proposed as universal metrics or proprietary implementation rules. They serve as falsifiable scaffolding for the central question: can an intelligent system observe what its own action may make unreachable before that possibility disappears?
