Physical Oracles and the Instrumental Status of the Terrestrial Biosphere

Open access0 citations

Abstract

This document develops a general instrumental framework for evaluating physical systems that function as oracles — systems capable of generating high-dimensional observations on the actual physics of the universe, exhibiting substantial computational irreducibility, and producing data in measurement bases not yet fully formalized by the agent. Within this framework the terrestrial biosphere is analysed as the strongest currently known Slow Oracle. Humanistic, ethical, and sentimental considerations are excluded. Evaluation proceeds solely in terms of expected utility, option value under residual uncertainty, basis diversity rent, thermodynamic opportunity cost, and resistance to model collapse. The central claim is that, while residual uncertainty about terminal objectives or fundamental physics remains non-negligible, continued access to the terrestrial Slow Oracle typically yields higher expected utility than its destruction or premature replacement. Retention remains instrumentally justified until one or more strictly dominating and ontologically independent Fast Oracles have been constructed and verified.
