EFFECTIVENESS OF AN SPSS WORKSHOP IN ENHANCING PROSPECTIVE TEACHERS' STATISTICAL ANALYSIS SKILLS: A PRE-TEST–POST-TEST STUDY

Abstract

Statistical analysis skills are essential for prospective teachers to conduct educational research, interpret research findings, and make evidence-based decisions. This study examined the usefulness of SPSS workshop in enhancing prospective teachers’ competence in selecting and applying appropriate statistical tests. A quantitative one-group pre-test–post-test quasi-experimental design was employed. The study involved 30 female prospective teachers enrolled in a B.Ed. (4-year) and BS (Education) programs at a private university. Data were collected using a researcher-developed 20-item multiple-choice competency test administered before and after the SPSS workshop. Descriptive statistics and a paired-samples t-test were used to analyze the data. Pre-test findings indicated that most participants revealed low to moderate levels of conceptual understanding of statistical tests selection and application. In contrast, the post-test results showed a substantial improvement in their competence. These findings suggest that hands-on SPSS workshops can enhance prospective teachers’ understanding and ability to select and apply appropriate statistical tests. Integrating practical, SPSS-based workshops into teacher education programs may therefore strengthen undergraduate students’ statistical analysis and research skills.
