The Strong and Weak Forces
Abstract
Unified Substrate Theory (UST) proposes that the universe is a continuous, tension-bearing, topologically rich medium, a substrate, and that all particles, forces, and interactions are mechanical behaviors of this medium. This paper develops a full UST account of the strong and weak nuclear forces, replacing the Standard Model's force-carrier particle framework with a mechanistic description grounded in substrate tension gradients and topological knot dynamics. In UST, quarks are stable topological knots in the substrate. The strong force is not gluon exchange; it is the behavior of a substrate flux tube, a region of concentrated tension formed between knot structures, whose energy grows linearly with separation length, producing confinement. Asymptotic freedom arises from near-field tension cancellation when knots overlap, not from a running coupling constant as an unexplained given. The weak force is not W/Z boson exchange; it is a topology-transition event in which a quark-knot flips from one topological class to another under sufficient substrate stress concentration. Beta decay, flavor change, and parity violation all emerge naturally from this picture. W and Z bosons are transient, massive substrate deformation wave packets generated by topology transitions, not pre-existing fundamental particles. Electroweak unification, in UST terms, is the substrate's phase transition from a high-energy disordered state, where all knot topologies are thermally equivalent, to the low-energy ordered state where knot classes are stable and topology transitions become rare, threshold-dependent events. The paper also presents testable differences between UST predictions and Standard Model predictions, and compares both frameworks in a structured summary table. The goal is not to rename Standard Model concepts, it is to provide the actual machinery the Standard Model's math describes but never explains. This work is part of a larger collection of UST documents. The other versions available in the DOI record are not revisions of this document. They are separate papers written for different purposes. Some versions present the full mathematical proofs behind the update rules, others provide a technical physical description of substrate behavior, and others are formal proof papers built around the Universal Balance Laws. Together, these documents form a complete set: a plain‑language booklet, a physical description paper, and full mathematical proof papers, each offering a different perspective on the same underlying theory.
