Life as the Transformation of Energies into Experience: A Philosophical and Scientific Inquiry
Abstract
This essay examines the proposition that life is the continuous transformation of cosmic, environmental, and individual energies into experience through awareness and action. Drawing from thermodynamics, phenomenology, Eastern philosophical traditions — particularly Vedic cosmology — and contemporary systems theory, the essay argues that this definition uniquely captures the triadic structure of life: its energetic substrate, its experiential character, and its dual mechanism of awareness and action. The essay concludes that this formulation resolves several longstanding tensions between scientific and humanistic definitions of life, offering an integrative framework with implications for philosophy, consciousness studies, and contemplative science.
