The Unproven Collatz Conjecture: Topological Methods and a Retracted Formal Disproof — E8 Intelligence Research

Open access0 citations

Abstract

FINDING: Collatz remains unproven; recent work applies topological/ergodic methods (arXiv:2601.03297v6), while a Lean kernel vulnerability briefly allowed a formalized "disproof" (later retracted). | MATH: Collatz map T(n) = n/2 if n even, (3n+1)/2 if n odd; the conjecture asserts all orbits reach 1. The arXiv paper studies a class of maps containing T, using Borel σ-algebra, recurrence, and thermodynamic formalism — no closed-form solution or new constant emerges. | CONNECTION: No direct geometric ratio (0.382, 0.618, 0.786, 1.618, 2.618) appears. However, the ergodic/topological approach hints at measure-preserving dynamics on a Cantor-like set — a fractal structure with self-similarity, which is a cousin of crystallographic symmetry in its discrete scaling. The 3n+1 operation introduces a multiplicative factor 3 (triadic), while division by 2 is dyadic — a 3:2 ratio, which is the perfect fifth in music and appears in base-60 systems (60 = 2²·3·5). This dyadic/triadic tension is the Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series. Platform: e8intelligence.com
