Rosacea epidemiology: a meta-analysis
Abstract
Background. Rosacea is a chronic, multifactorial dermatosis, the epidemiology of which is a pressing issue in modern dermatovenereology. Objective. To analyze the incidence of rosacea in the Republic of Bashkortostan for 2019—2023, as well as to review literature data on the prevalence of rosacea in the Russian Federation and other countries. We studied the structure of rosacea incidence depending on geographic and climatic factors, in particular on the Fitzpatrick skin type. We investugated the relationship between rosacea and sex and age differences. In addition, this article presents data on the prevalence of various clinical forms of rosacea. Material and methods. The incidence of rosacea in the Republic of Bashkortostan from 2019 to 2023 was assessed using data from the Republican Dermatovenereology Dispensary in Ufa. Statistical analysis was performed using an application program package. We studied the following databases: Elibrary, PubMed, ScienceDirect, MDPI, CyberLeninka, SpringerLink, and Wiley Online Library for the period from 1989 to 2024 and analyzed 50 scientific sources, which were used to draw conclusions about the epidemiology of rosacea. Results. Analysis of modern researches shows that rosacea occurs in approximately 5.5% of the global population. The vast majority of patients are between the ages of 30 and 50. The disease occurs in men and women of all racial groups, but it tends to be more severe in men. Rosacea subtypes are distributed almost equally among sufferers, including both men and women. Conclusion. Based on the analysis of published studies, as well as our own observations, we conclude that further research on the prevalence of rosacea, particularly in the northern regions of Russia, where many people with severe photosensitivity live, is needed.
