Photographic and Optical Detection of Canopus (S'hail) during Morning Twilight in the United Arab Emirates, 22-23 August 2026

Open access0 citations

Abstract

We report two pre-sunrise field sessions conducted in the United Arab Emirates to document the early seasonal dawn detectability of Canopus (Alpha Carinae), known in Arabic as Suhail, while keeping photographic, telescopic, binocular, and unaided-eye results distinct. Canopus was recorded using a 72-mm refractor and astronomical camera on both 22 and 23 August 2026. On the second morning it was also recorded with a DSLR and detected by one observer through 16x50 binoculars at 05:38 UAE Standard Time. No confirmed unaided-eye sighting was obtained. The observations provide a timed two-morning field record under challenging near-horizon conditions and do not establish the earliest regional heliacal rising or a general naked-eye visibility threshold.
