Oceanic Invertebrates: The New Hope For Cancer
Open access0 citations
Abstract
This article explores the potential of marine invertebrates—such as sea sponges, corals, and sea squirts—as a revolutionary natural resource for cancer treatment. While traditional medical research has predominantly focused on land plants, the deep ocean holds unique compounds, such as Trabectedin (Yondelis) and Eribulin (Halaven), which offer gentler and more effective alternatives to harsh chemotherapies. Furthermore, the paper discusses the major breakthroughs, challenges in sustainable harvesting, and the importance of conservation strategies like laboratory synthesis and controlled aquaculture to protect marine ecosystems while advancing medical science.
