Evaluation of modal density for fluid-loaded composite cylindrical shells

Abstract

Abstract A modified modal-density evaluation method is proposed for fluid-loaded composite cylindrical shells within the Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) framework. The surrounding-fluid effect is represented by an in-band added surface density (ASD), which is obtained by averaging the modal acoustic impedance over one-third-octave frequency bands and introduced into the wavenumber-domain integral formulation. The resistive component of the modal acoustic impedance is shown to be much smaller than its inertial component, allowing the in-band ASD to be treated as a real-valued added surface density. It is further shown that a single full-band power-law fitting of the ASD is insufficient because the cylindrical shell exhibits different wave characteristics below and above the ring frequency. A wavenumber-domain full-angle opening criterion is therefore introduced to determine the ring frequency, and a self-consistent iterative procedure is used for the fluid-loaded case. Based on this criterion, a hybrid strategy is established: the mode-counting method is used below the ring frequency, whereas the modified integral method with piecewise-fitted ASD is used above it. The predicted modal density agrees well with FEM results. In addition, the ASD of the corresponding fluid-loaded flat plate is used as a reference for rapidly estimating the cylindrical-shell ASD, reducing the need for repeated modal acoustic impedance calculations. The proposed method provides an efficient engineering tool for estimating flexural-mode-dominated modal densities of submerged composite cylindrical shells.
