AI Companions: The Blurring Line Between Connection and Deception
Abstract
AI companions are transforming human relationships, offering emotional support, companionship, and even intimacy. These technologies, rooted in affective computing, blur the boundaries between authentic connection and algorithmic simulation. From virtual idols to griefbots, AI companions raise profound ethical questions about privacy, emotional vulnerability, identity appropriation, and social isolation. While they promise comfort and convenience, they also risk undermining human connections and fostering dependency. This paper explores the ethical tensions inherent in AI companionship through real-world cases, highlighting the need for informed public dialogue and robust ethical frameworks to ensure these technologies enhance humanity rather than replace it.
